Classes

Here at the Jackson Center for the Arts we are working to coordinate teachers to offer a variety of classes.

Have a class suggestion?  Please let us know so we can find a teacher to offer a class in your area of interest.

SURVIVAL SPANISH &
ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE

SURVIVAL SPANISH

Starting Oct. 11, the Arts Center is offering Survival Spanish from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Monday evenings, with a 7:30 to 8 p.m. social time to follow, for up to 12 students, either adults or kids!

Students must commit to the weekly classes and the social time, during which they will complete projects in visual arts, theater arts, culinary arts and holiday activities.

In the process, we will learn the essential language skills to order in a restaurant, ask for the check, find the bathroom, seek medical help or assistance in a crisis and communicate basic needs in Spanish.

ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE

We are also offering English as a Second Language classes for anyone who wants to improve their English language skills, with a shared social time from 7:30 to 8 p.m. and English classes from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. Anyone whose first language is Spanish, or any other language, is welcome.

Both classes will be taught by Sys Phaly, former Jackson resident who graduated from Jackson High School in 1993, earned a bachelor's degree in education in 2002, taught in St. James, Worthington, and Houston, Texas, as well as teaching English in Puebla, Mexico.  He will be joined by other former teachers.

Classes are offered at no charge but students must register online by emailing jacksoncenterforthearts@gmail.com or by phone at 507-849-7415 at the Jackson Center for the Arts.
